Today, if you haven’t already heard, is international signing day in the world of Major League Baseball. All that means is that Major League teams now get to sign who ever they want internationally. While it might seem like a sort of organized chaos, it’s probably not all that complicated. You see, teams can sign players who will turn 16 by September 1, and if they already have shown some potential, they’ve probably already been contacted. You can read a nice little article about the signing of international youngsters here at SportsIllustrated.com.
While the depressed economy has led to lower wages for players and a halt on the increase in free agent dollars spent by many teams, we’re not sure how things are going to go in the international market. If you can find the right kid out of Venezuela or Costa Rica and get him for a couple million dollars early you could have the next David Ortiz or Miguel Cabrera. Will the ball clubs shell out the dough this year for unproven talent? Or will they back off in light of slumping economic times? We’ll probably see very shortly.
