Mark DeRosa Traded to Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals traded for Mark De Rosa recently in a move that ought to strengthen the Cardinals’ offense as the second half of the season begins here shortly.  The Cards are currently tied for first in the National League Central with the Milwaukee Brewers and have been enjoying another terrifically powerful season by slugger AlbertPujols. Of course, when the going gets tough more and more teams will attempt to walk Pujols, making it more and more important to get decent batters behind him in the order so that his walks don’t go to waste.

Mark DeRosa should fit the bill perfectly.  In the article about the trade by Scott Miller over at CBSSports.com, he goes into some of the stats that should bode well for the Cardinals, including the fact that DeRosa is slugging .661 against left handers and has a nice average when there are runners on base.  Thinking about the Pujols walk situation prompted the World Series Blog to take a trip on over to Baseball-Reference.com to see if there were any stats to prove that he’s a good hitter with a man on first.  Does he ground into double plays a lot?  He’s already grounded into a double play 6 times this season, and back in 2007 he did it 17 times that season.
