We’re going to ESPN for some Major League Baseball discussion today. First up: Buster Olney. If you’ve been paying attention to the NL East, you probably know that the division is rife with turmoil and injuries. Buster sums up the whole situation in a few concise paragraphs. Who will win this tattered division? Will the team that can remain the healthiest get the division title? Buster refers to the NL East as a game of Survivor and Dodgeball.
Peter Gammons has a fresh new article out that’s all stats. He talks about the Red Sox’ infield (no surprise there) and about the Red Sox’s pitch-seen count (again, no surprise), but then he gets into some non BoSox territory talking about one-pitch outs. One pitch outs are particularly nice. your defense stays out in the sun for less time, your starting pitcher throws fewer pitches, this saving his arm from strain, and the other team’s offense is demoralized for their ineffectiveness. Cliff Lee of the Indians leads the league in one-pitch outs with 45 this year.
