A Classic Tryout

As many baseball fans can attest, the World Baseball Classic brings some of the world’s best players to the field as they round off. As usual, the American’s Albert Pujols, Alex Rodriquez, Vladimir Guerrero, Alfonso Soriano and Hanley Ramirez all plan on playing with the Dominican Republic’s baseball team this season, though they are all stars in the MLB. One such player, Pedro Martinez, isn’t just looking to play with his family’s heritage but also as a chance to show the US what he’s got. The pitcher has been injured for the past few months and via the New York Post said that if he isn’t signed by Spring Training will report to the Dominican team for the Classic. “He wanted to use the opportunity of the Classic not only as an opportunity to play for the Dominican Republic, which he didn’t do last time, but also as an opportunity to showcase himself, to demonstrate to teams what kind of condition he’s in right now,” Martinez’s manager Fernando Cuza said in the Post.

Martinez would be the first, at least announcing his plans, to use the Classic as an on field tryout. Martinez is 37 years old and went 506 with a 5.61 ERA in 20 starts for the Mets last year. Despite a career of 214-99 and 2.91 ERA, with his injuries it’s no surprise that Martinez went empty handed during this slow winter season.
