Price Range Penny

According to MLB.com, the Red Sox are close to getting veteran right handed pitcher Brad Penny for their 2009 team. Confirming these speculations last night to WEEI.com, Penny said “There were a lot of teams involved. But I wanted to go somewhere where I knew we had a great chance at winning and Boston is that place.” However, the Boston Red Sox won’t comment on free agent signings until they are official. Rumored reports were first struck by FoxSports.com when the one year contract deal was reportedly given to Penny at $5 million with incentives up to $3 million. After the Red Sox lost big deals with CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett to the New York Yankees the team changed their opinions to something a little more attainable (and less expensive).

Penny, who was injured throughout most of 2008, would make up an all-star lineup for the Red Sox that includes Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Tim Wakefield. With younger pitchers like Clay Buchholz and Justin Masterson the team could be in great shape by the end of Spring Training this season. Penny had back to back 16 win seasons in 2006-2007 with the Dodgers and slipped 6-9 with 19 appearances the next year.
