World Baseball Classic!

The world is ready for the 2009 World Baseball Classic, most particularly defending champions, Japan.  Japanese stars who play in the United States are ready to defend their country and their title with the second time the event happens this March. “I will try to win the WBC in earnest again,” the Mariners’ Ichiro Suzuki told the Kyodo News in October. He hit a .364 in the 2006 tournament and will push other Japanese Americans to do well this year.

When the first World Baseball Classic was played three years ago, Daisuke Matsuzaka was a famed performer in his own country but otherwise relatively unknown. The game put him on the map, as he was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Not but nine months later, he was playing with the Boston Red Sox for six seasons. In his first season he became the first Japanese starting pitcher to win a World Series game. No doubt Matsuzaka will play a huge factor in this year’s games.
