Blue Jays team owner and found of Rodgers Communications Inc. Ted Rodgers passed away in his home in Toronto last night. Rodgers was 75 years old. He suffered from congestive heart failure over the past few years. “Ted Rodgers was one of a kind who built this company from on FM radio station into Canada’s largest wireless, cable and media company,” Alan Horn said in a press release from Rodgers Communications. Horn, the chairman of the company, will serve as acting CEO while the board of directions searches for a new chief executive officer. “A leader also is giving to the community through his and [his wife] Loretta’s many philanthropic initiatives. He will be sadly missed,” Horn continued.
Rodgers Communications purchased the Blue Jays for $160 million in 2000. The team hadn’t won the World Series since 1993, and in the eight seasons that Rodgers has had ownership the Toronto team has won four winning campaigns. Rodgers also increased the payroll from $45 million three years ago to $97 million this year.
