Today marks the deadline for clubs to offer arbitration to their ranked free agents, but unlike past years, 2008 has brought up many different declarations that have made both the players and the clubs weary with securing deals. In the four weeks since free agency players began to severe ties with their agencies, few decisions have been made that are set in stone. “Monday is a big day,” Brewers general manager Doug Melvin told MLB.com. “A lot of teams are waiting until that day passes to make other decisions.” Last year 17 free agents were offered arbitration and only three accepted: catcher Michael Barrett (Padres), infielder Mark Loretta (Astros) and pitcher Andy Pettitte (Yankees). Just two years ago the numbers were twenty five and two.
“In this economy,” said Colorado general manager Dan O’Dowd to MLB.com, “you never know what the future will bring.” If you want to keep yourself updated with all the latest action that occurs on and off the Major League Baseball field in this recent economy and for the rest of the year, check out StubHub.com, where all your favorite teams and favorite players will strut their stuff on their home greens when you get your very own MLB tickets!
