Trade Rumors Flyin’

Rumors continue to circulate about which free agents have signed a contract — but the rumors remain rumors. Catcher Jason Varitek, shortstop Edgar Renteria and pitcher Odalis Perez are all still free agents, though each were linked to certain teams and a finalized contract. On the other hand, the Pirates put in bids for two Indian players for the Minor League, while the Rangers and Red Sox added bids to Japanese pitcher Junichi Tazawa. The Diamond Backs have also extended their contract with Ramon Vazquez for one more yet with an option for another, but the veteran infielder wants the option to play with a longer contract. “It was less than what another club is offering to us,” agent Melvin Roman told MLB.com. “[The Diamond Backs] said they would get back to us with something else and that’s what we’re waiting on right now.”

Yet another long discussed trade is Varitek, whose agent Scott Boras has long denied any rumors that a contract has been signed. “I’ve had no financial discussions with [Red Sox general manager] Theo [Epstein] regarding Jason Varitek,” Boras told the Boston Herald, according the MLB.com.
