Peavy Still Holding Out

Though the Chicago Cubs signed free agent pitcher Ryan Dempster with a $52 million contract, the windy city team still has high hopes for another pitcher in the free agencies — Jake Peavy. The San Diego Padres general manager Kevin Towers told media outlets last night that the two general managers, the Cubs Jim Hendry and Towers spoke earlier yesterday, before press conferences, and “they still have interest,” according to MLB.com. However, after a record setting deal with Dempster the Chicago team is going to have to look good and hard if they want to impress Peavy with a contract of his own. “They might have to be creative with their finances to make it work…” continued Towers. According to MLB.com, however, talks between the two teams had all but ended once Dempster signed because the Cubs couldn’t afford both members.

On Tuesday Dempster signed a four year contract to stay with Chicago. The pitcher is a 17 game winner comes back to another ring of rotations with the Chicago team, who already has Carlos Zambrano, Rich Harden and Ted Lilly. Towers is still hopeful that a few more teams would come into the mix for Peavy, who will make $11 million next year and is already owed $63 million over the remainder of his contract. “They have got a few attractive pieces, but it would probably involve a third or a fourth club,” Towers said.
