As discussed yesterday, there are a number of potential candidates for the running as the National League’s Most Valuable Player. For the American League Most Valuable Player there really are only five.
Dustin Pedroia, Red Sox: Second baseman, went 21 for 34 (.618 average) until September 3; he scored 118 runs and fell .002 points shy of a batting title
Justin Morneau, Twins: He had 129 RBIs (44 more than another other teammate) and hit 21 percent of the team’s home runs; he doubled his 2006 MVP numbers
Francisco Rodriquez, Angels: He had 62 saves and essentially directed the Los Angeles team
Josh Hamilton, Rangers: Initially the MVP-elect, after August his team led the worst 24-game start in club history, rallied only by his 130 RBIs
And while a few others are dark horses, these men, everything from a big number guy to an injured man to a relief pitcher, could all be considered during the Baseball Writers’ Association of American voting on Tuesday.
