Much like this season’s close cut National League Playoff race, the decision for the National League’s Most Valuable Player will be just as close. According to MLB.com, there are at least 15 players who stood out during the last few games of the 2008 season’s National League Series and who might potentially receive MVP votes when the panel of 32 Baseball Writers’ Association of America begins. Though the Phillies earned the last two MVPs, the choices are still very much in the air. As always, the Phillies leading players are Ryan Howard and Chase Utley, withAlbert PUjols of St. Louis a top target, though with his team out of the finals some voters may put that against him. Others include Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun, Atlanta’s Chipper Jones and the Mets’ Carlos Delgado. Nominees were selected before the actual playoffs began, with ten choices on each ballot. Here’s the low down :
Carlos Delgado, New York Mets: Hit .281, 38 home runs and 115 RBIs and led the Mets to first place in NL East; he has finished top six in the MVP balloting three times
Ryan Howard, Philadelphia Phillies: Lead National League with 48 home runs and 146 RBIs
Albert Pujols, St. Louis Cardinals: Finished .357, with 37 home runs, 116 RBI’s, and a lot more numbers to make him finish in the top.
