Maddon and Piniella Win Managers of the Year

Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon was named the Manager of the Year in the American League, while the man he succeed, Lou Piniella, was named the Manager of the Year in the National League, by the Baseball Writer’s Association of America. The titles were announced today as the two men were recognized for their achievements during the 2008 “glory season,” as the Tampa Bay Rays reached the ultimatement success - World Series champs. If you’re a big Major League Baseball fan, then it should come as no surprise that Maddon earned the award as he put his Tampa Bay Rays on the first playoff track after a decade long losing streak.

This is the first award for the 54 year old manager, who first assumed a managerial position in 2005 by the Florida team after taking over for Piniella. Unlikely other candidates who have heard their annoucements over the phone in their home, Maddon was vacationing with his new bride, Jaye, in Europe.

Piniella, who has won the American League twice (1995,2001) as the manager with the Seattle team the Mariners, earned the National League with his Cubs during the Central Division title with a 97-64 record.
