With all the election coverage that has been going on these past 13 months, it should come as no surprise that the presidential candidates come up as a topic around Major League Baseball. So when Barack Obama was elected as the 44th President of the United States this past Tuesday, it wasn’t a huge shocker that tons of celebrations spurred in Chicago’s Grant Park. The Illinois senator and President elect is a huge White Sox fan. Not only is White Sox general manager Kenny Williams a longtime friend of Obama, but he is also one of only three African-American general managers in Major League Baseball’s clubs. The two have known each other for ten years and played basketball together this summer. “During the times we have run into each other, the several times I saw him in spur-of-the-moment sort of situations before he got busy with the campaign, he always asked pertinent questions about what was going on with the White Sox,” hitting coach Greg Walker told MLB.com. While every general manager is currently attending the meetings at Dana Point this week, all of them eagerly put aside their baseball discussions Tuesday night to tune into the election. “I’m interested in all these questions of foreign policy and national security,” Williams told the New York Times on Tuesday night. “In between his games, shooting a couple of baskets, he asks me, ‘What about your pitching?’ I said, ‘Excuse me, you worry about national security, I’ll worry about the pitching.’”
As I’m sure the rest of the nation is taking a breather from all the political mumbo-jumbo that has been going on as of late, Obama and his White Sox team will soon be riled up for the next season as he gets ready to step into the White House. Keep yourself updated on all the pitching and more with your own White Sox tickets, and who knows, you may catch a glimpse of the new President in the crowd!
