Much like Alex Rodriquez was the hot topic just a year ago, Manny Ramirez is on everyone general manager’s minds as they begin to position themselves for trades and free agent signings this week. The 30 general managers are meeting at a resort hotel off the Pacific coast today to chart out the success of their future seasons. “I don’t see this being any different than dealing with any other elite player who has been out there in the past,” Kevin Towers told mlb.com, the longtime general manager of the Padres, one team that is not in the running to snare Ramirez. “He’s going to be a nice free-agent piece for somebody. The unknown is the free-agent market, in general. Is it going to regress? Is it going to stay the same? That may well slow down the [trading] process.” Last year, Ramirez was traded from the Red Sox to the Dodgers during a last minute non-wavier Trade Deadline deal. Because of the trade, the Dodgers went on to become the 2009 National League West champions as well as moving as far as Game 5 against the eventual World Series champions. When Ramirez played for the Red Sox, the team went to the World Series twice. General manager for the Dodgers denies any talks about a potential trade in the future, saying that the two year, $60 million deal is all a rumor. Afraid of missing all the action? Don’t worry, spring training is still 15 weeks away, and while no fan can participate in the trading action, you can always play fantasy baseball while you wait, even factoring in the change of players.
