Are the Rays the best Major League Baseball Team? That’s debatable. But there’s hardly any argument left that they aren’t the team with the best value. The Rays have the second lowest payroll in the majors, and yet they are kicking some serious tail. As of this very blog they are sitting atop the AL East with the best record in the game at 49-32. They are the only team cracking a .600 winning percentage. And, as Jason Stark points out in his debate, they aren’t exactly playing the worst teams. They regularly have to go up against the big spenders (Red Sox and Yankees) and they’ve done well against both of them.
The arguments against the Rays seem to all hinge on the fact that they are historically not so great. But so much can change in a year in this sport. Teams can go from a World Series birth to the cellar of the league in one season, so why can’t they go from mediocre to grand in one season? The World Series Blog is a firm believer in the Rays. We really hope to see a three-way race in the AL East for the division crown.
