Eric Gagne has agreed in principle to terms that would put him in Milwaukee next year. The free-agent reliever played for the Boston Red Sox last season, so you are probably familiar with Gagne and his pitching. When he was with the Dodgers he was considered to be one of the best relievers in the business, so he’s a big name in baseball. He will be brought in to replace the Brewers’ last star reliever, Francisco Cordero. The Brewers lost Cordero to free agency earlier in the offseason, so they are in need of depth at that position. Gagne’s deal is reportedly worth over $10 million, including performance bonuses.
The Brewers weren’t too far away from being a legitimate World Series contender deep into last season, so presumably they don’t need to get too much better to remain in the hunt. This move wasn’t one that struck people off guard, as the Red Sox are loaded with pitchers, and the Brewers were in need of a good reliever. If Gagne can recapture the fire that he had while in LA, the Brewers might have just made a move that will put them in the playoffs next season. Make sure to get tickets to see the Brewers in spring training to see how Gagne does on his new team.
