Last night the one-game tie-breaker between the Colorado Rockies and the San Diego Padres went to 13 innings, eventually determining the last team to enter the 2007 MLB playoffs. The Colorado Rockies prevailed, but not before a huge scare in the top of the 13th inning, when the Padres scored two runs to gain the lead in overtime. The Padres put in Trevor Hoffman, the all-time career saves leader, to try to seal the deal. However, he promptly gave up three runs, the last of which coming on a diving play at the plate. Matt Holiday slid face-first into the plate, but to most Padres fans it looked as though catcher Michael Barrett did a good job of blocking him from touching home. The umpire called Holliday safe, and the game was over, much to the joy of everyone in attendance at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado.
This means that the Rockies will play the Philadelphia Phillies and the Cubs will play the Arizona Cardinals in the NLDS. The first games of the 2007 postseason will begin tomorrow, with both NL games playing, as well as the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels playing in ALCS action. To all the fans whose teams are out of the playoffs, “there’s always next year.”
