The MLB Fashion Police

In an incident that has sparked a great deal of controversy in Major League Baseball, Boston Red Sox manager Frank Francona was given a uniform inspection mid-inning during a game against he Ney York Yankees yesterday. Francona was later ejected from the game for arguing another call, but he seemed to have been set off from the previous encounter with the officials. The inspection happened while Derek Jeter of the Yankees was on second base and presumably attempting to steal third. Obviously this would be a time in the game when the manager’s instructions and attention to the game would be critical. Thus, everybody got mad about it.

The league has issued an apology, stating that the timing of the inspection was “unfortunate.” Yet, perhaps the rule should be changed. MLB has an interest in keeping the players and coaches dressed properly, but perhaps for guys over 50 years old the rule could be slackened, so long as you are not looking like a hobo. I mean, doesn’t it look a bit silly to see an overweight man in his golden years in a baseball uniform, belted up and synched down? Oh, well. That’s baseball.
