Craig Biggio, the Houston Astros institution at second base just reached 3,000 hits for his career, a major milestone for one of Major league Baseball’s most prolific and consistent sluggers. Though 3,000 hits is nowhere near a record for a career, Biggio’s feat is special for many reasons.
First of all, Biggio accomplished the feat at home in Houston, in front of the fans who have watched him play from his rookie season up until this very moment. He did it in front of the fans who cheered for every single hit of his career. Secondly, the Astros also won in dramatic fashion, though not off of a Baggio hit, off of a grand slam by Carlos Lee. Quite a game to have gotten Houston Astros tickets at StubHub.com, no?
Biggio was actually tagged out at second base on his 3,000th hit, attempting to turn a line drive up the center into a double. It wasn’t the best decision by a baseball standpoint, as he was thrown out by a mile. But perhaps he just wanted to go back to the dugout to celebrate with family, teammates and friends. That’s what I plan on doing when I get my 3,000th hit.
