Today, April 30th, 2007, the Yankees are dead last in the AL East. This is New York’s one day off in a span of three weeks full of games, barring any cancellations. The pitching is substandard. Joe Torre’s job is hangs in the balance. The Red Sox have jumped out to an early lead in the division. Things don’t look so good for the Yankees.
Said Joe Torre, “I don’t think the standings are an issue at this point. We all know we’re going to start winning consistently sooner or later, and obviously sooner is more appropriate. But I don’t think you’re concerned in April about being five or six games out of first place.”
The good news is that it’s still fairly early in the season. The bad news for those of you who get New York Yankees tickets at StubHub.com is that the Yanks are going to have to have a complete turnaround in the next month or two or things are going to get really ugly. It’s hard to imagine that Torre’s job might depend on having a very unfortunate couple of months in April and May, considering his past record with the team. The other good news with the Yankees is the batting. Specifically, Alex Rodriguez, who leads the Americal League in home runs among other things.
