The champagne has certainly been flowing freely since the Yankees clinched the World Series title on Wednesday night and team members have had plenty of reasons to feel pretty good, especially those who had never experienced a World Series win before. CC Sabathia said to USA Today, “I didn’t think it was going to be this special.” Clearly his mind changed when an entire bottle of bubbly was emptied down the back of his shirt. A.J. Burnett was also in high spirits, saying, “I’ve never been part of something like this. It’s amazing.”
Other newbies to the pinstriped team include: Nick Swisher and Mark Teixeira, the latter of whom led the team with 39 homeruns and 122 RBI this season. His homerun during Game 2 was clearly a momentum changer in the series.
Another season has come to a close, with the Yankees celebrating their big win on into the weekend. Be sure to tune in again next season and see which two lucky teams will be featured in the 2010 World Series. In the meantime always check out StubHub for new information about MLB.
On Wednesday night, the New York Yankees ended a nine-year wait and clinched the World Series by beating Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game Six. After the game concluded, Hideki Matsiu was awarded the MVP award, and no one doubted he deserved it as he tied a World Series record with six RBIs.
The players had many different reactions, reported by the Associated Press. Alex Rodriguez said, “My teammates, coaches and the organization stood by me and now we stand here as world champions. We’re going to enjoy it, and we’re going to party!”
Derek Jeter, who is among the older set of Yankees who experienced their three-year run of championships from 1998-2000, said, “It feels better than I remember it, man. It’s been a long time.”
Manager Joe Girardi, who also won championships as a Yankee player, pointed toward George Steinbrenner with his comments and said, “To be able to deliver this to the Boss, the stadium that he created and the atmosphere he has created around here is very gratifying for all of us.”
Yankees fans will probably be celebrating for days after this win. Want to be a part of the action next year? Then get your World Series tickets from StubHub.
This is one of those moments - it all comes down to this game tonight. Deep in the series, the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies are set to play Game 6 tonight at 8pm EST on FOX. Fans for each team are clenching their jaws as they await the outcome of the sixth game. For Yankees fans, they simply hope they can open up that long awaited bubbly, for Philly fans they hope their team can power through yet another game, as the Yankees lead 3-2 in the series.
The matchup clearly comes via World Series matchup Andy Pettitte and Pedro Martinez. Yet no matter the outcome, the real surprise could be could be if Chase Utley gets passed Richardson’s prize and gets the second MVP award for a losing team. In Game 5 he got his team out of the dug out with two home runs to see the Phillies winning 8-6, while his series of five home run makes him tied with Reggie Jackson, a well known Yankee who got the most in a World Series. Though it is only speculation, Richardson’s son said to the New York Times: “He said, ‘Dad, they might lose, but Utley has the chance to be the most valuable player.’”

The biggest news in the broadcast world in the past few weeks has been Fox. The channel is now the leading channel in the country, and the World Series apparently helped keep it on top. EW.com reports the weekly ratings, noting that Fox came out on the top with Games 1, 2 and 4. Game 4 brought in 22.8 million viewers. The closest non-World Series programming to climb that high up the chart was ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, which earned 17.4 million viewers. Impressive, but not enough to supplant the top dog (or is it the top fox?)
Let’s face it: America loves baseball. It always has and probably always will. The popular sport still draws in high numbers, and even without Fox’s high-rated political programming–responsible for some of their highest ratings–sports would hold them aloft. World Series Game 3 was the lowest-rated game, coming in at number seven on the chart and earning just 15.4 million viewers. That’s still not too shabby. You can bet that Fox executives were happy to see those kinds of numbers.
Of course, it’s one thing to watch a game on TV, and another to actually be there. In the future, make sure that you buy World Series tickets at StubHub.com.
I thought the top half of the ninth was over. It looked like Johnny Damon had struck out, but he’d managed to get a piece of the ball. My buddy told me that it would be a “series-altering foul ball.” I chalked up his statement simply as wishful thinking, but he was right. Damon proceeded to single, steal second and then take third with some heads-up base running with the shift on to face Mark Teixeira. Teixeira would get plunked by Brad Lidge, setting the stage for Alex Rodriguez’s game-winning double. It was a whirlwind series of events that took place with two outs, and now the New York Yankees are one win away from securing their 27th World Series title.
The Yankees were in control for most of the game, but the victory seemed to be escaping them when Joba Chamberlain gave up a game-tying home run to Pedro Feliz in the bottom of the eighth. As they’ve done all season, though, the Yankees came back in dramatic fashion. This was the kind of win that the Yankees would have let slip away in recent years, before guys like Nick Swisher and A.J. Burnett reminded these guys how much fun it is to play baseball every day. The Yanks will try to close out the series tonight, but will have to beat Cliff Lee to do so.

The New York Yankees were not about to be blown out by the Phillies during Game 2…I mean, even Jay-Z was there. The Yankees must be feeling pretty good about now being that some 18.9 million viewers also tuned into watch New York defeat Pedro Martinez and the Philadelphia Phillies. New York owes much of their thanks to A.J. Burnett, who managed to hold off the Phillies to just one run over the course of seven innings. Philadelphia’s Martinez surrendered three runs in six-plus winnings.
Other star players of the night included: Jerry Hairston Jr.who started a seventh-inning rally with a leadoff single and Jose Molina, who helped pick off Jayson Werth with a quick snap throw to first base during the fourth inning. Manager Joe Girardi said of the move, “I thought that was real, real important.” The Yankees finished the night with a final score of 3-1.
The Yankees and Phillies will meet again on Saturday night for Game 3 of the Series.

Cliff Lee outdueled CC Sabathia, Chase Utley homered twice, and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the New York Yankees 6-1 on Wednesday night in the opener. After the game, Lee told a commentator, “To be honest I really never have been nervous in the big leagues. This is what I wanted to do my whole life.” The defending champion Phillies shut down Alex Rodriguez and the Yankees in the first Series game at the new billion-dollar ballpark. The Phillies are trying to become the first NL team to repeat since Cincinnati in 1975-76. Utley told the press “We have confidence. We know we have a good team.” The second baseman was 0 for 7 with five strikeouts going against Sabathia, but the ALL-Star came up big with two home runs. In the third inning, Utley hammered a 95 mph fastball thrown by Sabathia. The ball barely went over the right-field wall. The homer was the first by a left-hander allowed by Sabathia at home this year. In the sixth inning, Utley hit his second home run, sending another 95 mph heater deep into the right-center field bleachers. The Phillies look to take a 2-0 lead in the series when they play the Yankees tonight in the city that doesn’t sleep.

This year’s World Series kicks off tonight, and this is sure to be an exciting matchup. On one side stands the Philadelphia Phillies, who are the defending World Series Champions. On the other stands the New York Yankees, who have made numerous trips to the World Series and are nearly always competitive. Both teams have had close games on their way to the World Series. The Phillies had to overcome the Colorado Rockies and the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning 3-1 and 4-1, respectively. The Yankees were up against the Minnesota Twins and the Los Angeles Angels, taking the wins 3-0 and 4-2, respectively.
Both teams look poised to chase another championship, although only one can come out on top. Both teams have loyal home-town fans, and winning in a hostile road environment will likely be the deciding factor in this series. Each team also has its own stars like Yankees Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez and Phillies Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins to add pizazz to the matchup. No matter which team you cheer for, this isn’t the series you want to miss. Make sure your spot is reserved by getting World Series tickets at StubHub.

The Angels ended things on a disappointing note Saturday, losing 5-2 to the New York Yankees, who will now polish their pinstripes for a World Series run against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies clinched their National League championship status last Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Angels made a couple of grave errors in Game 6. Howie Kendrick dropped a throw while attempting to cover first base and reliever Scott Kazmir through a ball of Kendrick’s head on the next bunt. In addition Joe Saunders allowed five walks and seven hits in 3 1/2 innings. The Yankees, on the other hand took every opportunity to capitalize from the Angels’ mistakes. Of course it also helped that the Yankees had Andy Pettitte on the mound, who is currently 15-9 with a 3.90 ERA in postseason starts. Pettitte was quoted in the Los Angeles Times as saying, “I wanted to help this organization win another championship. I felt like this is where we’d be. It’s been a good year and it’s worked out.”
It looks like Pettitte will have the chance to battle it out on an even larger scale when the Yankees meet the Phillies on Wednesday night for Game 1.
